ABOUT THIS WEEK

Seven days of photographic safari and editing workshop in Madikwe Game Reserve, one of the best conservation areas in Africa. Every day we will head to the bush for two long and flexible game drives, in our private vehicle, looking for the most interesting scenes that the day offers, exploring different areas of the reserve. We might decide to stay in the underground photographic hide and enjoy the view from there at sunrise or sunset.

During our afternoons, editing sessions with Lightroom will be set up, at the time you like: one to one, to define your abilities, or for the group, to give the basic rules. All will be set up on your needs, related to your photographic and editing level. Lazy afternoons are also on the menu!

The underground photographic hide facing outside the fences, overlooking a waterhole and safely accessible 24/7 will catch every free single moment you will have, this is for sure!

Only 6 guests.  Join us today!

ABOUT MADIKWE AND OUR PHOTOGRAPHIC TARGETS

Madikwe Game Reserve is currently the fifth largest game reserve and is also one of the lesser – known parks in South Africa. This makes it a hidden- gem as it is regarded as one of the best conservation areas in Africa in a 680 km2 park. It borders Botswana and is only 4 hours drive from Johannesburg. It is a malaria free Reserve.

The area offers the possibility to spot all the Big Five, a large diversity of antelope species, the entire range of smaller predators, over 300 bird species, and a tremendous diversity of reptiles, amphibians and invertebrates. Encounters with brown hyenas, black and white rhinos are common. The number of elephant is incredible. We won’t run after every animal, but we will instead try to focus on the best photographic opportunities available, relying on the deep knowledge of the area and its wildlife of our qualified guide and the suggestions of the hosting photographer. For sure we will look for predators, elephants and rhinos, if we get lucky we might also spot the endangered African Wild Dog and cheetahs, but we won’t ignore also the beauty of all the small creatures around us.

ACCOMMODATION

We love every trip to The Bush House, it provides an intimate setting and personal touch from the owners. It is an old farmhouse that after years of family laughter and happiness has been transformed into an inviting and relaxing residence that encourages guests to kick off their shoes and unwind.

THE TWO AREAS

Tswalu Kalahari is South Africa’s largest private game reserve, now protecting over 110,000 hectares of spectacular grasslands and mountains.

This part of the Kalahari is a “green” desert, semi-arid grassland with open savannahs, rich in a remarkable range of habitats.

Within its boundaries, Tswalu uniquely combines the classic rolling Kalahari dunes with the Korannaberg, the southern Kalahari’s only range of mountains. These massive hills provide a sheltering influence which increases the biodiversity of the area enormously as well as creating a stunning visual backdrop.

Londolozi’s powerful combination of geography and wildlife creates the famous atmosphere that returning guests call the ‘Londolozi feeling’.

Londolozi is situated on the Sand River in the very heart of the Sabi Sand Game Reserve. This reserve forms part of the Greater Limpopo Transfrontier Park, a vast and growing area that currently covers six million acres and incorporates the famous Kruger National Park. Wild animals move freely across this vast space, offering spectacular game viewing and a true wilderness experience.

OUR PHOTOGRAPHIC TARGETS

There are no artificial barriers between Sabi Sand and the adjacent Kruger National Park, animals can roam freely through an immense territory and this provides guests with several different sightings and a unique bio diversity. The area offers the opportunity to meet all the Big Five (rhino, leopard, lion, buffalo, elephant), a variety of antelopes, all the little predators, over 300 species of birds and many species of reptiles, amphibians and invertebrates. Sabi Sand owes its fame to the high concentration of leopards and the relative ease of their sightings. In Sabi Sand these reclusive and elusive predators are usually very relaxed, allowing us to get up close and personal. It’s not so rare to see a couple of leopards a day. A good number of lions are also present in this area, and they are so beautiful and fit to have earned their own Facebook page (search styx.lions). If we’re lucky, we could even meet the rare wild dogs, so dramatically  close to extinction, which frequently cross the reserve chasing their preys. Do not forget your tripod at home, we can do some night photography session! And bring your laptop (possibly with Lightroom installed) for some editing sessions.

ACCOMMODATION

Our lodge is a small gem with only 8 rooms, strategically located in one of the most beautiful areas of the reserve. Forget the glitzy luxury lodges of  South Africa, here everything is designed to have the least possible impact on the surrounding nature: by choice no electric light is used at night, hundreds of candles will illuminate our dinners and will create a memorable atmosphere, but you will find electrical facilities in your rooms, in order to recharge the batteries of your cameras. There will be comforts in order to make your stay more enjoyable, such as the possibility of  a wifi area and the possibility to book a relaxing massage ( at an extra cost).

ABOUT THIS WEEK

Zimanga, in KwaZulu Natal, is the first reserve in Africa to be designed specifically to satisfy the needs of today’s wildlife photography enthusiasts as well as safari clients who have a deeper appreciation for the bush, both of whom crave an unhurried and exclusive experience. There are currently five photographic hides on Zimanga. Each of the hides is designed for its potential subject whether it is a large mammal like a giraffe or elephant or the smallest of birds like waxbills and twinspots.

The photographers are invisible to their subjects behind specially imported one-way glass so as not to startle the subject with any movements or sounds and are seated on comfortable executive-style chairs. Tripods with gimbal heads are provided in each hide. A solar-powered air conditioning unit situated in the roof of the hide controls the temperature and humidity within.

We will enjoy all the flexibility one may desire during a photographic safari week.

We will spend our days sharing our time between hide photography and game drives, and, possibly, also some walking safaris with the habituated pack of wild dogs.

Only 6 guests will be hosted by our photographer Linda Oteri during this week, and only 3 vehicle will be out in the field, with no possibility to be disturbed at any time.

Lightroom sessions will be held at any time, according to your specific needs.

All this makes for an unforgettable experience!

BE FREE IN THE BUSH

We will be free to roam in the wild for as long as we want, in the way that we prefer. Incredible hide photography, included an overnight stay in the Umgodi hide, game drives and walks are on our menu for this unforgettable photographic week!

A PHOTOGRAPHIC INSIGHT

Spread over 6000 hectares of pristine bushveld, fever tree forests and rolling hills, Zimanga is bisected by the Mkuze River and home to a huge variety of animals and birds. From leopards to wild dogs and elephants to cheetah, nearly every sought-after sighting is accounted for. There are over 400 bird species recorded at the reserve.

Something about the 5 Zimanga photographic hides: there are two Bird Bath Hides or Reflection Hides, called the Mkhombe and Bhejane hides named after the isiZulu words for white and black rhinos respectively.  These are ideal for small bird photography.

The larger Lagoon hide focuses on waterbirds and crocodiles in the summer season. Umgodi Overnight Hide is currently the only hide that is custom designed for large mammal photography.

The bee-eater hide is a mobile unit that can be placed in close proximity to where white-fronted bee-eaters nest and produces stunning results for these colourful birds.

The vulture hide is situated on a hill with great mountain backdrop, and the action can be fierce as up to 5 species of vultures, alongside other scavengers, compete for food.

Hide sessions will be planned according to guests desires and the group may be split between game drives and hide photography, in order to give everyone the best experience.

During the game drives we will track animals according to guests preferences and the suggestion of our guide, we usually have daily sightings of the pack of wild dogs, and we might be able to get off the vehicle and shoot from ground level these very special creatures.

September is a very pleasant month in Kwa Zulu Natal, with temperatures range from 20° to 30° celsius. This is absolutely a not to be missed trip!!

ACCOMMODATION

The new main luxurious Lodge of Zimanga will be hosting us during this week: it offers spacious lounge areas inside the main building, on the decks as well as an elevated view of the Mkhombe valley from the roof lounge.

Other facilities include a boardroom, library and quiet lounge attached to the south-eastern wing for those seeking to escape the crowd.

The term crowd is loosely used here as the lodge will only sleep a maximum of 14 guests, hosted in six free standing two-bedded units with two additional single rooms, offering privacy within a splendid KwaZulu Natal lowveld setting.

Single rooms with no supplements are available only here at the main lodge, if you travel alone, reserve your single room soon!

For now we can show you a rendering, as the construction work are still running but almost finished. Images will be available soon!

TIMBAVATI BUSH ADVENTURE – TENTED CAMPS 2 – 8 JUNE 2018

OUR PHOTOGRAPHIC SAFARI STYLE

Our photographic safaris always focus on tracking wildlife, according to the experience of our guides and of the wildlife photographer who will host the group. To maximize the photographic aspects, there will never be more than two people in each row of the car, which will always be reserved for our small group. Our vehicle will always be positioned in the best way possible, thinking both about composition and light, to allow you to have great shots. We will look for interesting scenes and stick to them as long as possible, in order to make the most out of every possible interaction

ABOUT THIS WEEK

It is an adventurous 6 day safari in Timbavati, a Wildlife Reserve bordering the Kruger National Park, in South Africa.  We will experience both a permanent tented camp and a mobile one, set up just for us. Every day we will head to the bush for two long, flexible game drives, at sunrise and sunset, looking for the most interesting scenes that the day offers. But a vehicle won’t be our only way to explore the bush, as amazing walking safaris will be set up for us whenever we prefer. Life in the bush doesn’t stop at sunset, that is in fact when it starts , so we will be ready to get onto the drive vehicle and dash out into the bush at any time of night to investigate interesting noises. Many activities to learn everything about bush life will be offered and are already included in the price: bushcraft, spider and scorpion module and basic astronomy.

This year we would like to offer you something very special, that we have personally experienced and enjoyed years ago: two Rhino horn microchipping. This activity has to be reserved by January 2018 and has an extra cost. A helicopter, a vet and a specialized team will be on your side, doing the most of the specialized job, of course, but you will have your own tasks and responsibilities during each of the two planned microchipping session. This is a real hands on experience that will change your life! ( soon in our blog the story of the amazing day we spent with the Bateleur Team, the vet Dr. Peter Rogers, many researchers and the Timbavati Management when we sponsored a day microchipping rhinos ).

Don’t lose the opportunity to give your contribution in saving these endangered creatures!

Come and experience real life in the bush!

The tutoring of a wildlife photographer is included at all times

We won’t run after every animal, but will focus on the best photographic opportunities available, relying on our qualified guide and tracker‘s deep knowledge of the area and its wildlife and the suggestions of the hosting photographer. We will also definitely look for predators, Elephant and Rhinos. If we get lucky we might also spot the endangered African Wild Dog, but we also won’t ignore the beauty of all the small creatures and reptiles around us.

Please don’t forget your tripod. We might enjoy some great night photography sessions too!

LOCATION AND CAMPS

We will have electricity and it will be possible to recharge electronic devices and batteries. The food is of excellent quality and is best described as wholesome South African cooking. Nights will be spent around the fire in the central boma.

At the mobile camp we will taste life in close contact with nature. There won’t be electricity here but we will still have some home comforts. We will be sleeping under a bed of stars in adventure bow tents, enjoying wholesome, basic meals prepared over the open fire by bush camp staff, spending our nights around the fire.
